The region, now known as the Cahuenga Pass, was initially lived on by Gabrieli natives of Shoshonean descent. Specific details about these early residents is scanty, but apparently they'd two primary settlements within the general area: Kawenga (which supposedly means little hillsides) within the approximate site of current day Hollywood (north from the former towns of Colegrove, South Hollywood and Cahuenga Valley) and Toluca (stated to mean fertile valley), which incorporated a couple of areas near today's communities of Toluca Lake and North Hollywood (formerly known as Lankershim), near the la River, that was formerly known as Rio de Porciuncula through the Spanish.At that time, the Pass was apparently nothing more than a dusty, rough narrow break or nature trail within the hillsides appropriate just for hiking, riding a horse or perhaps a mule. Famous, because its only casualties were one horse and something mule. For the following 80 years, the Pass offered mainly like a winding tributary permitting the turbulent growth of the la basin spill-over in to the San Fernando Valley.

It wasn't before the mid-1920’s that developers recognized the potential for the moving slopes bordering the Pass (See our HKCC Photo Archives). The then barren hillsides north of Cahuenga Avenue and east of what's now Barham Boulevard was designated Hollywood Knolls. The initial subdivider envisioned this because the site of exclusive estate-size homes with attracts filmland celebrities. Several spacious Spanish-style homes were completed prior to the depression delayed future development. However, in 1935, the ring of hammers on nails echoed across Dark Gorge and across the ridges once again. Then, as now, residents were attracted through the undulating topography, the magnificent vistas, and also the unique natural aspect easily located near the middle of the sprawling metropolis.

The Mulholland Dam, finished in 1924, produced a personal lake to boost the environment. Oaks and eucalyptus trees were grown to shade the lots and curving roads. And also the Off-shore electric Railway stopped at frequent times on its journeys towards the Valley and back.
